Understanding Tooth Extraction: Reasons, Procedures, and Aftercare

When I have to talk to my patients about removing one or more of their teeth, it isn’t a conversation I take lightly. I understand how difficult it can be to learn about dental health issues, and finding out about a dental extraction isn’t the best news. However, I perform extractions only as a last resort after exploring all other options, and with so many tooth replacement options, we can restore your smile in no time.

So, what do you need to know about the dental extraction procedure and how to care for your mouth afterward?

Why Extraction?

The main reasons I recommend extraction to my patients are as follows:

  • If your tooth is too decayed for a filling
  • If you have advanced gum disease and your gum tissue and jawbone can’t support your teeth
  • If you need orthodontics and your teeth are too crowded
  • If you break or crack a tooth and it’s cannot be restored

The Dental Extraction Procedure

Here’s what you can expect from this straightforward procedure:

  1. When I perform a dental extraction, my first priority is to make you comfortable. I will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area thoroughly.
  2. Then, I will use special dental tools to gently loosen and remove your tooth.
  3. Once your tooth has been removed, I will clean and disinfect the area.
  4. If necessary, I will place stitches in the area to help with healing.

That’s it!

Aftercare Tips to Help You Heal

I recommend following these aftercare tips for a speedy recovery after a tooth extraction:

  • Avoid rinsing your mouth or spitting for 24 hours
  • Use ice packs on your face near the extraction site to reduce swelling and help with discomfort.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers every four hours as needed.
  • Avoid smoking for several days after extraction.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, but don’t drink from a straw.
  • Eat soft foods such as yogurt, oatmeal, and scrambled eggs.
  • After 24 hours, rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times daily.
