If root canals scare you, you’ve likely picked up some wrong information that isn’t true. Root canals in Fredericksburg, VA aren't painful or complex. Rather, this procedure is a way to relieve pain and prevent tooth loss due to crumbling or dental extraction following infection or trauma.

Let’s explore what you need to know about root canals.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal Procedure?

If you need a root canal, it’s because your tooth suffered trauma, deep decay, or a deep tooth root infection. Often, we recommend a root canal when a patient comes to us with a dental emergency—severe root canal pain and swelling.

When inflammation and infection reach a tooth’s canal, root infection treatment is the only option outside extraction. Leaving the tooth untreated means infection spread and continued or increasing pain, coupled with eventual loss of the tooth and potential loss of others.

Root Canal Process

Your dentist in Fredericksburg anesthetizes the treatment location, extracts the infected material from your tooth, cleans the canal, and then seals it off with a temporary filling. You come in for a permanent filling or a temporary crown in about two weeks. We use a crown if the infection has weakened the tooth.

You’ll not feel pain during root canal therapy, but you may notice pressure as your dentist saves your tooth. You may experience mild discomfort for a few days when the anesthesia wears off.

We recommend not eating or drinking things that are too hot or too cold until the anesthesia wears off. However, if you’re wondering, “Can I eat after a root canal,” the answer is yes! But we recommend not chewing tough foods on your treated tooth for the first day or two. Remember, it will likely be fitted with a tooth crown soon, restoring your bite completely.
